What Is Base64 and URL Encoding?

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format using a radix-64 representation. URL encoding (percent-encoding) converts reserved and unsafe URL characters into standard percent-sign hexadecimal triplets (such as %20 for space).

1. Safe ASCII Transport

Ensures binary data (images, cryptographic tokens, Basic Auth headers) transmits across text-only protocols like HTTP and SMTP.

2. URL Percent-Encoding

Replaces spaces, ampersands (&), question marks (?), and special characters in query parameters.

3. Full UTF-8 Compatibility

Correctly handles multibyte international characters and emojis without character corruption.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Base64 is an encoding format designed for data serialization and transmission, not security. Anyone can instantly decode a Base64 string without a password or key.
Base64 takes 3 bytes of binary data (24 bits) and splits them into 4 6-bit characters. This 4-for-3 ratio results in an approximate 33% increase in total string length.
URL encoding converts specific non-ASCII and reserved URI characters into %XX format for address bar safety. Base64 converts the entire payload into a 64-character ASCII alphabet.
Yes. All transformations happen 100% inside your web browser via native JavaScript functions. Zero text is uploaded or stored on any server.
