What Is an IP Address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numeric or alphanumeric identifier assigned to every device connected to the internet. It enables web servers, DNS resolvers, and network routers to pinpoint where to route your requested web pages and network traffic.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 198.51.100.1) while IPv6 uses 128-bit hexadecimal
notation (e.g. 2001:db8::1) supporting over 340 undecillion addresses.
Every public IP belongs to an Autonomous System Number (ASN) managed by an ISP, cloud provider, or telecommunications carrier via BGP routing.
Country and city identification is 95%+ accurate. Coordinates represent the nearest metropolitan routing point, not your physical home address.
