What Is a DNS Record Lookup?

A DNS record lookup queries a domain name's authoritative Domain Name System (DNS) zone files to retrieve mappings between human-readable domain names and server IP addresses, mail exchangers, aliases, and security certificates.

1. A & AAAA Host Records

A records direct traffic to 32-bit IPv4 addresses, while AAAA records direct traffic to modern 128-bit IPv6 server infrastructure.

2. MX & Mail Routing

MX entries assign priority levels to incoming mail servers (e.g. Google Workspace, Exchange Online) to prevent delivery failures.

3. TXT & Security Policies

Carries domain ownership verification tokens and email authentication directives including SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are over 30 standardized DNS record types defined by IETF RFCs. The most common are A (IPv4), AAAA (IPv6), CNAME (Canonical Name), MX (Mail Exchange), TXT (Text verification/SPF), NS (Nameserver), SOA (Start of Authority), and CAA (Certificate Authority Authorization).
TTL stands for Time to Live. It is a value in seconds that tells caching DNS resolvers how long they should store and serve a DNS response before querying the authoritative nameserver again.
An A record maps a hostname directly to an IP address (e.g. example.com -> 93.184.216.34). A CNAME record creates an alias pointing one hostname to another domain name (e.g. www.example.com -> example.com).
